How To Launch A New Idea - create a blue ocean business

Wondering how to launch a new idea?

Hey Tamara here. I am out testing a new invention on the testing ground floor and I thought this would be the perfect time to take a break and answer one of the questions I just got in because it's pretty relevant to what we're doing. Today the question is:

Where do I find this elusive blue ocean place for my new idea?

Now for those of you who've never heard blue ocean before. It was actually all the rage in the end say mid-2000 like 2003-2004, something like that. But the point of it is very valid, which is how do I find that space that isn't cluttered. Not the red ocean - that's the cluttered one. But the new space, the place that nobody owns in the hearts and minds of the customers out there. The place that you can gain a lot of traction in. I often call it your unique selling space, same kind of thing. You get the point. So here's the thing though that I want to point out about this question. The question itself is actually flawed. Here's the deal.

You don't find a blue ocean you create it.

And you create it by asking yourself many questions. Here's a couple of them.

  • Where is all my competition cluttered?
  • What are they doing?
  • What are their benefits?
  • Where's all that things that they are doing that are bumping up around each other?
  • What can I do differently than they do?
  • Which problem do they solve?
  • What problem are they not solving in how they do it?

You've got to ask those questions. What is it that you do that's unique that your competition doesn't do? With that information you create the blue ocean. Here's the deal with it. Nobody else has created it before, so how are you going to find it there's nothing to find until you create it?
