Ideas For More Persuasive Communication - Change Their Question

The language of innovation involves how to use open questions to get people to engage in your innovative ideas vs shutting them down. How can you use the language of innovation when approaching your boss with a new idea? Oftentimes their first question is: well, what's it going to cost? So, if you are in that situation I want you to, first of all, recognize that your boss, the key decision-maker, whoever it is saying to you what's it going to cost; that's their way of shutting it down, that's their pattern of thinking to immediately put up their defenses. So, I want you to break their pattern before they can even get to that question.

The next time you go to that person who's going to say that to you, you're not going to give him a chance, you're going to say I have an idea, what I want to know from you is what would make it cost worthy, then go into that idea. That little shift in breaking their pattern and coming up with new language and a new way for them to think will help break their thinking as well, it will take down their defenses and you'll get the conversation going.
